Automatic Horizontal Scraper Centrifuge

The Automatic Horizontal Scraper Centrifuge is a heavy-duty, batch-type solid-liquid filtration system engineered for challenging chemical, pharmaceutical, and food-grade applications. The unit features fully enclosed, vapor-tight housing suitable for hazardous organic solvents (Zone 1/2 Ex-proof and N2 inerting systems available).

Step 1: Feeding – Slurry is fed into the drum while it rotates at a low-to-intermediate speed set by the VFD. The mechanical distributor layers the material evenly across the basket.

Step 2: Separation & Primary Dewatering – The drum accelerates to operational speed, directing the liquid phase through the filter media while retaining solids inside the basket.

Step 3: Cake Washing – Wash fluid is applied via spray nozzles to purge soluble impurities from the solid cake.

Step 4: Secondary Dewatering – High-speed rotation removes residual moisture from the washed cake.

Step 5: Hydraulic Scraper Discharge – The drum decelerates to a designated discharge speed. A hydraulic scraper advances and cuts the cake, leaving a thin heel of 10–20 mm on the cloth, and the cake falls through the bottom chute.

Step 6: Cloth & Heel Washing – Backwashing nozzles clean the filter cloth and residual heel layer to restore filtration rate for the next cycle.

Particle Size Range: Crystalline, granular or fibrous solids of 10 μm to 10 mm, with best results at 20 μm to 3 mm. Fines below 5 μm blind the filter cloth and are not suitable.

Slurry Concentration: Accepts feeds with 10% to 60% solids by weight.

Compatible Materials: Designed for permeable filter cakes, including starch, ammonium sulfate, sodium chloride, PTA, urea, and organic intermediates.

Process Limitations: Not suited for high-viscosity sludges, colloidal suspensions, or fine particulates (<5 μm) that lead to filter media blinding.

Material Options: Wetted parts (basket, housing, scraper, wash pipe, discharge chute) are available in SS304 and SS316L for neutral and mild media, duplex 2205 for chloride brines, titanium TA2 for chloride and oxidizing acids, and Hastelloy C-276 for hydrochloric acid and mixed halides. Mechanical Safety Interlocks: Door locks prevent housing opening during drum rotation. Scraper actuation is interlocked with basket speed sensors.

1. When should I choose a horizontal scraper centrifuge over a flat-plate manual-unloading model?

Choose a scraper centrifuge for more than 10 batches per day. Its automatic cycle takes about 8–15 minutes and requires no operator at the basket. For fewer batches or fragile crystals, manual unloading is more economical and gentler.

2. What cake moisture can I expect?

Typical results are 1–3% for ammonium sulfate and urea, 2–5% for sodium chloride, and 5–12% for starch. Coarse crystals with a narrow size distribution typically reach the lower end of these ranges.

3. How thick is the heel layer?

The heel layer is typically 10–20 mm thick and protects the filter cloth.

4. How long does the machine last?

Bearings typically require replacement every 3–5 years, or 25,000–40,000 operating hours. The basket and housing usually last 15–20 years under normal duty.

5. What does the N₂ inerting system require for flammable solvents?

Oxygen is typically maintained below 5% by volume, with a high-oxygen alarm at 8% and an interlock that stops feeding.

6. What do you need for sample testing and a quotation?
